Subject: Dyson New Student Weekly Update - May 31 - First-Year Students

Now that June is upon us and the semester has come to an end, we are focused on making sure you have all of the information needed to make the most of your first semester in Dyson. As mentioned in a previous correspondence, our goals are simple; enhance your understanding of what makes Dyson unique and connect you to the people who are here to support you.

There will be a lot of moving parts this week as we getting everything rolling. You will be added to the Dyson New Student  Canvas site where you will be assigned your Design Team (see below to learn more) and we will have our first Discover Dyson Virtual Summer Series session. Don’t worry – you will not miss out. If you have questions or are unsure of anything, do not hesitate to ask.

You are part of our community now and we look forward to the next four years of getting to know you and watching you grow.

DESIGN YOUR DYSON

One of the courses you take as a first-year Dyson student is our 1-credit, AEM 1101: Design Your Dyson course. This course was introduced last fall to provide our first-year students with the opportunity to develop a deeper comprehension of the undergraduate experience within the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management.

AEM 1101 exposes you to the expectations and opportunities available throughout your academic journey. The Design Your Dyson course seeks to create and foster a sense of community around shared interests, enhance problem-solving skills through design thinking, and helps you formulate collaborative and lasting connections to peers, faculty, staff, alumni, and the Dyson School.

There are six sections of this course and you will be assigned to a Design Team with 23 of your peers. You will be receiving your Design Team Assignment by Wednesday, June 3rd and throughout the summer, you will meet with your Design Team as part of the Discover Dyson Virtual Summer Series.

DISCOVER DYSON
Virtual Summer Series - June 2020

The Discover Dyson Series is designed to expose you to resources, people, and academic information within Dyson. Each week there will be a different topic presented and time for questions. The events will be hosted by the Dyson Office of Student Services in collaboration with partners in Dyson and throughout Cornell. The Discover Dyson Series will continue throughout July and August and we will share those topics very soon.

We would like to keep the sessions smaller which means that we will using your Design Teams to allow for more discussion. You will either be assigned to Thursdays at 3:00pm or 4:30pm depending on your Design Team (mentioned above).

Students are required to participate and engage in these sessions throughout the summer as a way to better prepare yourself for your journey.

  • Thursday, June 4 – General Welcome
This session will be a general welcome, expectations of summer 2020, who we are, and time for questions.
  • Thursday, June 11 – New Student Family Session
This session will be much like the June 4th session, only directed towards families of our new students. Hosted by the Office of Student Services and the Career Management Center. This session is not required.
  • Thursday, June 18 – Pre-Enrollment Info Session & Q&A
This session will cover pre-enrollment for fall courses.
  • Thursday, June 25 – Current Student Panel
This session will be an opportunity for our new students to hear about the Dyson and Cornell experiences from some of our wonderful current students.
  • Tuesday, June 30 – Corey Earle – History of Business Education at Cornell
This session will be led by Corey Ryan Earle ’07, instructor of The First American University (AMST2001), the popular course about Cornell’s history and will provide our students with an overview of the unique history of business education at Cornell.

If you are concerned about your ability to participate or engage in any of the requirements for this summer either because of technology/internet access, your home environment, your work schedule, or other reason, please reach out to me (alp232@cornell.edu) so that we can work through your situation.

DYSON SUMMER READ

This summer, all new Dyson students will join members of the faculty and staff for a Dyson Summer of Callings, The Purpose and Passion of Work by Dave Isay.

Details about the book and our expectations will be coming soon. In August and throughout orientation, students will reflect on the book, their personal narratives, and interact with other students, faculty and staff about their narratives. You will be able to review our Dyson Summer Read library guide (coming soon) to learn more about the author, talking points, and faculty insight.

This book will be used in various first-year courses including: AEM 2200, AEM 2700 and AEM 1101. If you are unable to purchase the book, please reach out to Andrea Poag (alp232@cornell.edu).
